Welcome to the July issue of our newsletter.

At its meeting today, the Reserve Bank of Australia decided to once again maintain the current policy settings, including the targets for the cash rate and the yield on 3-year Australian Government bonds of 25 basis points.

The federal government recently announced a $25,000 building grant for home owners which will hopefully encourage home owners to spend money on construction and keep hundreds of thousands of builders and tradespeople employed in the wake of the possible downturn due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There are a few restrictions on eligibility, however, to access the grant:

• you cannot earn more than $125,000 per year for singles or $200,000 per year for couples;
• the value of the property (house and land) for a new build cannot be more than $750,000;
• renovations must cost between $150,000 and $750,000 and the house must be valued at less than $1.5 million prior to renovation;
• the property must be owner-occupied and renovations must be part of the main property and be completed by an eligible builder (ie. they must have been licensed or registered before the government's announcement).
